September 2018 Meeting Minutes

September 2018 Mtl MQG Meeting Agenda
Tuesday, September 11 at 7pm, SouthWest Mission Verdun

Quick points of business:
  • Welcome back! Exec team for the 2018-19 year are: 
    • President - Stephanie 
    • Vice-president - Izzy 
    • Treasurer - Claudia 
    • Secretary - Fiona 
    • Registrar - Josee 
    • Programming - Joanna, Stacy, Cinzia 
    • Assisting - Patti
  • Dues for 2018-19 = $40, see Josee to complete registration
  • Snack volunteers, send around sign up sheet (list complete)
  • We will continue to collect donations for the mid-year raffle (December) and end of year raffle (June) like we did last year. If you have something you would like to contribute, bring it to a meeting. To participate in the raffle, you simply need to wear your name tag during our regular meetings and see Izzy to get your raffle ticket at the break.
  • LDH (https://shopldh.com/) had donated some scissors which we will be raffling off at the December meeting
  • Collect Palliacco quilts -
    • Total of 15 quilts being donated, Debby has them and will be delivering them soon. 
    • Thank you to everyone who contributed!!! This was a great turnout for a great cause.
  • Collect QuiltCon challenge blocks, we may have enough for more than one quilt
    • Next steps: design/layout will begin at the September 22 sew-in, you can bring more star blocks to the sew-in if you still wish to contribute
    • Volunteers for finishing: Patti, Shannon S., Josee, Izzy and Nicole (quilting), Michele (backing), Cinzia and Stephanie (binding).
    • Our deadline for finishing the quilt is December so it can be shipped in time for QuiltCon
  • MQG released new version of website, be sure to set up your new profile and join the Montreal MQG Circle. If you have any difficulty, there is a 'Help' section specifically for new website 



Meeting topics:
  • Andrea Tsang Jackson workshop - 
    • Trunk show Friday Nov 23 at the SW Mission (free for workshop attendees, $5 for MQG members, $10 for the public - pay at the door) 
    • Workshop Saturday Nov 24 at the CRCS St-Zotique 
    • Sign up sheet is open, deadline to sign up is the October meeting; any spots left will be made available to the general public at that time 
    • Cost $80 plus cost of pattern ($12)... total is $92, deadline to pay fee is November meeting; pattern will be provided at the workshop by Andrea 
    • Terms and Conditions for Workshops (new document) 
    • Sept sew-in will be an FPP demo, so if you have never tried it before but want to practice before the workshop, join us on the 22nd
  • Announce mug rug swap
    • Halloween or autumn themed mug rug, dimensions and design flexible 
    • Swap will take place at the October meeting, bring rug in a small opaque bag
  • Varia - 
    • Beaconsfield guild is holding a large quilt show in May 2019: there will be an exhibition, workshops, trunk shows, etc. Full announcement to come from Debby. 
    • Isabelle Dupras (mtl member) has an event coming up in Drummondville. 
    • MAC – exhibition starting next month of modern/contemporary artist Francoise Sullivan: https://macm.org/en/exhibitions/francoise-sullivan/
    • If anyone knows of potential venue for a guild exhibition, please let Joanna know. 
    • Marie-Eve and Agnes : Have created a website for quilters : a place to share a ‘quiltfolio’, links to own website, social media, can have a personal profile page Basted.ca – live now. Use as a database/documentation for our quilts. 
    • Melanie: 23 day road trip to US – Paducah: National Quilt Museum, Rotating exhibit every 3 months. Fabric shopping – large store – all collections, pre-cuts, Liberty (quilting is my therapy) Missouri Star Quilt – Wisconsin (museum) – exhibit Japan. 
    • We welcomed three new faces, welcome everyone!

    • Charity Quilts – Melanie (practiced her quilting with a ruler). Made with blocks from last year’s skill builder blocks. Francine’s quilt (also with skillbuilder blocks). Stacy (improv blocks mixed with leftover house blocks). Stephanie (Mermaid Blossoms block) in guild colors. Lily (variance of MQG block of the month – balancing the imbalance – 2-sided quilt. Left over hexies for Libs Elliot workshop in Liberty fabrics. Stacy (3 more charity quilt – orphan blocks from skill builder and house blocks). Agnes (pieced from skill builder blocks). 
    • Debby – String quilt in Batiks, with flannel back. 
    • Suzanne: memory quilts (for twins). Son’s clothes mini quilt 
    • Michele: Upcycled cushion cover – upcycled wool clothing – Frida Kalho, Dali. 
    • Josee: flying geese (skill builder). 
    • Stephanie: Canadian Modern Quilt Bee quilt : Knee socks block – purple green orange, blocks from across Canada. Title : Secondary 
    • Cinzia : improv quilt – leftover blocks from Fill the Void Quilt. 
    • Jessie: HSTs – yellow chevrons and Dresden plate (sunflowers) king size 
    • Agnes: 10 years in the making: hand and machine quilted: Kaffe Fasset stripes. Libs Elliott workshop. Weight of love 
    • Marie-Eve: baby boy quilt – Sweet diamonds baby quilt from Moda Bake shop website. 
    • Nicole: pillow – Carolyn Friedlander _ hand quilting and appliques two pillows. Hexagon table topper.
